Religion
The Fourth Grade Religion curriculum focuses on the gift of faith that was implanted in the children at Baptism. The faith message is developed through Scripture and human experiences. Grade 5 students focus on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit by studying the Paschal Mystery, Sacramental systems, Eucharist, worship, relations with others and the Liturgy. The Sixth Grade Religion program is devoted to the study of God’s saving love as it is revealed in the Sacred Scripture, particularly the Hebrew Scriptures. It is designed to help the students increase thier knowledge of salvation history so that they may respond to God with ever-deepening love and gratitude. The "Catholic Vision of Love" Curriculum is used with the students in Grades Five and Six.
Language Arts
The Reading program for Grades 4-6 is literature-based and designed to integrate spelling, grammar, writing, reading, and cross-curricular activities. Students are involved in various writing styles and learn the correct process of critiquing, revising and editing their work. The children participate in annual writing assessments from the Diocese of Pittsburgh and are assessed using specific rubrics to evaluate focus, content, organization, style and conventions. They are given the opportunity to construct, critically examine, and apply meanings as students develop into readers and writers.
Mathematics
Intermediate students learn to solve problems by using math in every area of their lives. Math text books and supplementary materials address the skills itemized in the Math Curriculum Guidelines. Skills include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, geometry, problem solving, estimation and measurement. The children develop valuable math skills through the use of calculators, games, and technology.
Science
All areas of our intermediate science curriculum are introduced and explored using a step-by-step format. Students are provided with a variety of learning experiences that promote their understanding of themselves and their environment. Emphasis on the major areas of life, earth and physical science help the student master these concepts. Critical thinking and problem solving that apply to daily life are also stressed.
Social Studies
Grade Four students examine the geography, history and economy of various areas of the United States and compare them with similar areas around the world. They become aware of their roles as citizens of Pennsylvania as they study their state. The children in Grade Five examine the geography, history and economy of our nation with an emphasis on our political institutions and the ideals that formed them. Students become aware of their roles as citizens of our nation and of our state. Grade Six students continue to explore their geography, history and economy and cultures of regions of the world. They become aware of their roles of citizens of the world. All Intermediate Social Studies classes discuss current events.
Fine Arts
Intermediate music explores various aspects of music including rhythm, phrasing, tone, color, melody verses harmony, listening music appreciation and dynamics. Children experience and sing music from diverse cultures. During classes students enjoy singing, rhythm instruments, musical games, dancing, listening for enjoyment and listening for analysis. Students focus on music history and music appreciation with an emphasis on theoretical aspects. Students in these grades take on a bigger responsibility in leading the school in music for Liturgies and for our Spring and Christmas Musical programs. Intermediate art lessons allow students to experience the seven art elements: line, shape, color, value, texture, form and space by using a variety of media and materials. Students create art work in a daily sketch book and through classroom projects. They learn about famous artists, their style and representative works. |
